History of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, Palm Harbor, FL
St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church began in 1985, as a mission of St. Ignatius Church in Tarpon Springs. Plans were made and construction began on a building to meet the worship, social, education and administrative needs of the community. This building was erected on land that had been acquired by the Diocese of St. Petersburg, in 1974, under Bishop Charles McLaughlin.
By a decree, dated October 18, 1985, the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist, Bishop W. Thomas Larkin raised the mission to the status of a parish, and, on December 7, 1986, he blessed the new parish facility.
On September 8, 1985, the Sisters of St. Clare were welcomed to our parish.
Thanks to the dedicated work and example of the Sisters of St. Clare, who continue to be a vital part of our parish life, St. Luke the Evangelist can be proud of its flourishing Educational Programs for children, its instructional programs for adults and its pastoral care for the sick. Since its inception, St. Luke the Evangelist parish has enjoyed remarkable growth from a few hundred families to three thousand.
In 2005, St. Luke the Evangelist Church was further blessed when four Sisters of St. Anne, founded in India by Bishop Charbonnaux, joined our parish family. They are a young order of Nursing Sisters who serve not only our parish, assisting with the religious education of our youth and care of the homebound, but also the community, working at many of the local health care facilities tending to both the physical and spiritual needs of the sick.
As we share this special celebration of 25 years, we invite you to contribute your time, treasure and talent to keep alive and increase that spirit of warmth that is apparent here in Palm Harbor, and has come to be known as “The Spirit of St. Luke.” May our parish continue to grow in the tradition of our patron, as we celebrate in the love of Christ and share our faith together in the true Spirit of St. Luke.
