St. Mary Parish at 500 Paw Paw St., Paw Paw, MI 49079 US - Parish Nurse Program

Parish Nurse Program

Our Parish Nurse, Angie Douglas, checking Juan Giscombe's blood Pressure
The Parish Nurse Program is a Healing/Wellness ministry set up to meet individuals' emotional, physical and spiritual needs using a holistic approach. The Parish Nurse is a registered nurse with specialized training who is committed to the healing mission of the church, and who will work within the parish to assist parishioners in their search for wellness and a better quality of life. What does a parish nurse do? A parish nurse is a nurse in the church who does health counseling with members, coordination of other volunteers, facilitates referrals, health education, and interprets the relationship between faith and health. The parish nurse may make home, hospital or nursing home visits as needed. The nurse may seek to educate and support individuals of all ages through a variety of activities through a volunteer pool. She is willing to discuss health issues, personal and spiritual concerns and evalutate the need for health and related services. The parish nurse may serve as a referral source for medical intervention, and to assist individuals in physician communication as necessary. She will also help you understand your health issues as needed. In addition, the parish nurse will coordinate a volunteer pool who are willing to assist in health activities designed to enhance well-being. At St. Mary's monthly blood pressure clinics are held after the 5 pm mass, and between the 8 am and 11 am masses on the second weekend of each month. Counseling is available for hypertensive parishioners. Recently we have been hearing about Stewardship in the Church and the thrust for parishioners to be involved by giving of their time, talent or treasure. Serving in this health/wellness ministry provides an excellent opportunity for parishioners to be involved in giving of time or talent. If you are interested in either meeting with the parish nurse, or becoming involved in this ministry, please contact Angie Douglas, RN through the parish office at 657-4459.
