St. Paul’s Parish has its origins in the early 1800’s. A number of Irish immigrants settled in the area. Some worked on farms; others were involved in the construction of the Hocking Canal and the railroads. In 1860 a lot was purchased on North Congress Street. That lot became the site of the first St. Paul's Church. As the parish grew, land on the corner of College and Mill Streets was purchased and cornerstone of the present St. Paul’s Church was laid on May 12, 1895.
The exterior of the church remains basically the same as it did when it was build except for the addition of the new rectory and handicap ramp. The structure has continued to serve the needs of both the Catholic population of Athens as well as the Catholic Students of Ohio University for over 100 years. During the 20th Century the parish grew substantially and St. Genesius chapel, which eventually became Christ The King University Parish, was established in 1955.
At the present time St. Paul’s parish is made up of 235 families. In addition approximately 200 Ohio University students attend and take an active part in our parish liturgy and activities.
The parish community of St. Paul’s continues to thrive. We look forward to the future without letting go of the past as we enter into the 21st Century.
