St. Peter’s Announcements
November is the month when we remember those loved ones that have gone before us. Remembrance cards have been placed at the entrances to the church on which you may list the names of those you wish remembered during our November masses. Drop the card in the collection basket and they will be placed on the altar, or you may place them directly on the altar yourself.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:
- Classes will be held today with coffee and rolls being served by the Wells and Tom Detweiler families. Classes will be held on November 15th with coffee and rolls being served by the Finnegan & Barloon families.
- ALTAR SERVERS: Training will be held today at 10:00 AM. It is requested that all Altar Servers, current and new servers attend the training. .
Congratulations to the Confirmation Candidates who will be signing the Rite of Choice this Sunday morning at 8:00 am Mass: Jordan Detweiler, Morgan Finnegan, Kameron Kahler, Tim Mardesen, Jared Steckly, and Matthew Wells.
YOUTH GROUP
- News flyer called: TEAM NEWS TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE. St. Mary’s & St. Peter’s Youth Group will be placed in the back of church once a month. This Team News will have upcoming events, articles for reflections & scripture reflection for that month, announcements & also a thought for the month on Renewal, Action, Piety & Study. Team News is for all high school youth & all parishioners to take home & enjoy.
- NCYC chaperone's meeting Nov. 15th at St Mary’s Hall at 11:00 after the 10:00 mass
- NCYC Send off Blessing, St. Peter's Saturday Nov.14th, 5;00 Mass. St. Mary's Oxford Nov.15th, 10:00 Mass. All participating plan to attend one of these masses that week.
Altar & Rosary Society: Next meeting will be on November 22nd after the 8:00 am Mass at Waldschmidt Hall. We will be discussing Pork Day proceeds and implementing a new way to choose new leaders for A&R.
The Annual Diocesan Appeal drive is now under way. We have received $5,785 in pledges towards our 2009 ADA goal of $14,043 from thirty-three parish families. That is 41% of our total goal. Twenty one percent of our parish families have pledged toward this drive. This drive funds many diocese programs - please consider giving to this cause. Thank you to those that have already given so generously.
HOLIDAYS CAN BE CHALLENGING FOR THOSE GRIEVING A LOSS. Iowa City Hospice and area communities offer free workshop on coping with the pain Iowa City Hospice will offer a free workshop, “Handling the Holidays,” which looks at healthy ways of coping with the holiday season after the death of a loved one. Anyone grieving the loss of a loved one is welcome to attend. The workshops are free and open to the public. This presentation will explore ways to help you cope with grief during the holiday season or any day of remembrance. A packet that includes specific “holiday survivorship skills,” a holiday job list, and a suggestion for a holiday memorial will also be provided. Sessions will be held: Sunday, November 8, 3-4:30 pm, Fry Funeral Home, 220 E. 6th Street, Tipton, IA; Thursday, November 12, 6-7:30 pm, Brosh Chapel and Community Center, 100 S. Cedar Street, Solon, IA.; Sunday, November 15, 3-4:30 pm, Stacey-Lewis Funeral Home, 2907 Mulberry Avenue, Muscatine, IA, and Monday, December 7, 1-2:30 pm, Johnson County Senior Center, 28 S. Linn Street, Iowa City, IA. Registration is encouraged, but not required. The debate and decisions on health care reform are reaching decisive moments. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) principals and priorities are outlined in a series of letters to Congress, fact sheets and other materials on the USCCB health care reform website (www.usccb.org/healthcare). USCCB is asking for Catholics to get activated and contact their Congressional representatives. Please see announcement on the Bulletin Board for more details. You can also go to these websites for updates, additional tools and resources: (www.usccb.org/healthcare) and to Glenn Leach (leach@davenportdiocese.org) for local insight and updates within the Social Action Office at the Diocese. Finally, please pray that Congress will act to ensure that needed health care reform will truly protect life, dignity and health care of all and that we will raise our voices to protect the unborn and the most vulnerable and to preserve our freedom of conscience.
Fr. Vitalis Torwel is one of our local priests who says Mass at the Newman Center, in Nichols and Lone Tree. Fr. Torwel's home in Benue, Nigeria they have the highest rate of HIV and AIDS in the African nation's 36 states. In the state of Benue there are 4.8 million people and only one health care facility for every 129,000 people. There are fewer than 1.7 health care workers per one thousand people. Shine Nigeria is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that teaches Nigerians preventive health measures and provides them with
job skill training. Proceeds from the bake sale will benefit Shine Nigeria. The bake sale will be after the 9am and 11am Masses at the Newman Center on November 15. Please donate some baked goods, come buy some or both to support Fr. Torwel's very worthy project. Funds are needed to buy sewing machines, tools for the job training centers, and a vehicle to help health professionals travel to different villages.
