St. Walter - 1st Grade at 11741 S. Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 US - Nightly Reading
| Nightly Reading |
Nightly reading is crucial in first grade. Students are required to read at least 15 minutes a night. In the beginning of the year, the reading may include poems from their poetry books, or any books and magazines of their choice. Beginning in October, the first graders will receive their very own readers. Two stories a week will be read in class. Stories are introduced on Mondays and Wednesdays (Tuesdays and Thursdays if we're off on Mondays). Children are required to read the same story for 2 nights (and serveal times a night) to increase sight word recognition, fluency, and comprehension. Please have your child RETELL the story in his/her own words. We work towards retelling stories in sequence throughout the year. Readers are allowed to be brought home, however, they must be returned the following day to use in class. Consistency is KEY to having your child become a successful reader, so daily reading is necessary.
