St. Walter - 1st Grade at 11741 S. Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 US - June Newsletter
This year has really flown by in first grade! We are finishing our very last readers. We also have been working hard on our Bubble Gum Reading. When an entire reading log is completed, a first grader gets a pack of gum! In Phonics, we learned about r-controlled vowels; or, ar, ur, ir, and er. We also learned about pronouns, commands, and exclamatory sentences. In Math, we learned how to count numbers beyond 100. We are now learning about lines of symmetry and fractions. We will be ending the year with double-digit addition and subtraction to get a head start in Math for second grade! We have been praying the rosary in honor of Mary for the month of May. In Science and Social Studies, we have been studying chocolate. We learned that someone misspelled the word cocoa. It should be spelled and pronounced as cacao (ca-cow)! The first graders also performed their very first play called The King’s Pudding. They performed for our parents and grandparents. The first graders have worked so hard this year. I am so proud of all of their wonderful progress! Please continue to have your child practice their math and reading skills over the summer so all is not forgotten! Thank you, parents, for all of your hard work and help this year. It was a pleasure teaching your children this year. Have a wonderful summer and please, keep reading!
