St. Walter - 7th Grade at 11741 S. Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 US - This Year's Overview

This Year's Overview

The following is a general overview of the reading and writing assignments for this year. The students are expected to read nine accelerated reading books this year and take the corresponding quizzes. Here is the breakdown: first quarter, two books; second quarter, three books; third quarter, two books; fourth quarter, two books. The students will be introduced to the writings of Edgar Allan Poe this year. We explore Poe's use of irony as we read "The Cask of Amontillado" during October. In December we will read the play A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley.  Lastly, small groups will participate in a book club and read selected stories. Throughout the year the students will be asked to create a type of writing that will follow a specific theme. The format of these writings will vary and include poetry, theme writings, and mini research reports. The students will also write longer papers. 1. The first paper, their Young Authors' stories, will be fictional. These will be due in second quarter. 2. During the fourth quarter the students will write an environmental science research paper. Further information will be sent home with your child when these papers are assigned. This gives you an idea of the writing curriculum for seventh grade. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks.
