St. William Church at 224 Lexington ST, Lancaster, KY 40444-0269 US - The History Our Church

The History Our Church

In the year 1887, Reverend William E. Gorey opened a station in Lancaster and Mass was offered in the County Courthouse. Later an old Lancaster schoolhouse was used. The Miller residence afterwards became a mission station for priests who would offer the sacraments.

In July 1951 the Most Reverend William T. Mulloy of Covington Diocese decided to make the church a permanent part of Lancaster. Fr. Ralph W. Beiting was appointed to work with the people of Lancaster in starting a parish here. The diocese bought six acres on Lexington Street, including two houses. One house became the Chapel and the priest’s quarters. The first Mass was offered in the Chapel on the Feast of Christ the King in October.

In 1955 a new building was erected to answer the needs of the growing parish and became St. William Hall. Bishop Mulloy visited Lancaster in April 1956 and blessed the new hall that is still used as Msgr. Beiting Hall today for many parish activities. The hall became the temporary church. That morning ground was broken to build a new church building.

In 1999 we completed a major redecorating project in the church which included painting and carpeting, wooden panels behind the altar, padding for the church pews and kneelers, etc. The basement was also renovated.

We are very active with a Pastoral Council, Liturgy Board, Youth Advisory Board, Property Board, RCIA, Altar Society, and Youth Group.

In September 2007 we recalled the past history by celebrating the Golden Jubilee with past and present members of our parish along with Bishop Gainer and former pastors. May the Lord continue to bless us to always be the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church we are.
