St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 5655 Stadium Parkway, Viera, FL 32940 US - March 16th, 2003

March 16th, 2003

A recent edition of Florida Today had an article on Ash Wednesday and the practice of Lent. It was interesting to read what people hoped to accomplish during the 40 days of Lent. The writer of the article mentioned fasting as one of the signs of Lent. Others interviewed spoke about doing positive things during this time that reflected their Christian faith. By now we have either decided on a particular way of living these days of Lent or we haven’t done a thing. It is still not too late to take advantage of this blessed time and seek to come closer to the Lord. When the sign of the cross made of ashes was traced on our forehead, it signified our commitment to the cross of Jesus and a desire to be faithful to that Lord. “Repent of your sins and believe in the Gospel” was prayed over us as we received the ashes. The principal theme and activity of Lent should be an effort to bring about change in our lives. Repentance signifies change. After prayer and reflection, we come to understand that there are certain things we do or think that are not consistent with being a Christian. We then decide to begin the process of changing this attitude and taking on one which is more in conformity with the teachings of Jesus as we hear in the Gospel. The results of making such changes can be multiple. First of all, we come to feel better about ourselves. We see that we can change things with a positive result. We feel happier that our life is less complicated or burdened by things negative. Another effect is that others are effected by how we act. Changing something negative improves our relations with family, friends and coworkers. All of us prefer to be around someone who is positive and seeks to improve himself or herself. Such a person makes a positive contribution to the environment in which we live. But above all, a major result is that we are faithful to the Lord who has called us to the Christian life. Our vocation as Christians is to listen to the Lord as God speaks through His Spirit and the Church. We are encouraged to look to the Lord and to follow him. When we change from something negative or sinful, we are stating our desire to be closer to the Lord. We opt for God’s way over other paths that take us in different directions. We are now at the Second Sunday of Lent. It is not too late to enter into the spirit of this Lenten season. Pray that the Lord may guide us to use well these days of Lent. Fr. Larry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our parish family welcomes all those who are among us. We hope and pray that you will find your time with us prayerful and uplifting. Peyton, the “Rosary Priest” and Catholic media pioneer, spent 51 years of his priesthood (1941-1992) serving the spiritual needs of families, particularly encouraging them to pray together daily, especially the rosary. The retreat will take place at Viera Faith Lutheran Church. There will be a morning session that will take place during our 8:00am Mass, and then an evening session at 7:00pm. Mark your calendars. This is an ideal way to live the Lenten season. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ During Lent Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence. Fasting means that there is only one main meal and that any other meals should not equal the main meal. Abstinence means that no meat is eaten. All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence (no meat). These regulations apply to those between the ages of 15 and 59. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Prayer / Sacrifice Beads There are still beads available in the back. These beads can be used for prayers or little sacrifices in your daily life. You can use traditional prayers or pray spontaneously, using your own prayers. Keep these beads in your pocket or purse. You have pledged $58,576.00 to this important appeal, and have paid on your pledges $30,927.00. The bulletin is available on our website after Mondays. Please visit the website at : www.vieracatholic.catholicweb.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Building Project One of the concerns that we have in dealing with our building of a multi purpose building is the situation of our land. We have a beautiful spot on Murrell Rd. next to IRCC. This land comprises 20 acres and was purchased by the diocese in 1988. At that time the Church in Florida sought to buy land in different areas with the idea that later on there would be need for a church in that area. At that time there was little development in Viera and it was an open area of farmland. Now, some fifteen years later, we are beginning the process of developing our land. But we are running into some problems. Engineers have studied the land and done the necessary tests required before we can move any further on the project. The result is that on our 20 acres we have a substantial amount of wetlands – 10.4 acres. The St. John Waterway Management group needs to review these findings according to the laws of Brevard County. We do not know what their decision will be and even if they will consider additional land to be wetlands. We will need to wait until their work is finished and the necessary meetings take place to see if we are able to mitigate these wetlands and at what price. For our present plan we need about 14 acres to be able to accomplish what we want to do. Right now we have only about 9.6 acres that we are able to use. This is not enough land for the project. Also the wetlands block access to some of the areas and would require vegetation to be kept in place which might obscure the view of our future church. There is the problem. I hope that it can be resolved to our benefit but if not – we will need to examine what options are available to the parish. We might have to look for some other land in Viera to be able to build the parish that will serve our needs now and for the future. I hope that it doesn’t come to this, but we need to be prepared. Fr. Larry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Registration at St. John the Evangelist We welcome all to our parish. We hope that you will discover a deeper sense of God’s love for you. We want you to feel part of this faith family. Help us to better serve you by filling out a parish registration form. They are available from the ushers or at the parish offices. Knowing our parishioners will allow us to better serve our parish community and to provide those programs that meet your needs. There are many parishioners who have filled out the sheet to receive offertory envelopes but have not filled out the parish registration form. These are available from the ushers as well as at the parish office. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Offertory Envelopes We encourage the use of offertory envelopes for your stewardship. If you have not received envelopes, you can drop by the office to pick up a box or request a box from the ushers at weekend masses. You need to fill out the sheet with your name, address and telephone number so that we can credit your gifts. If you have taken envelopes and not provided this information, please fill out a sheet with that information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Test “Test; test; this is a test.” The Lord tries us out, even tantalizes us, before choosing to work with us. God did this with Abraham, with Peter, James and John—even with Jesus! But Jesus, God’s own Son, “stands and pleads for us now,” that we not be “led into temptation or put to the test beyond our means.” “God is on our side and who now can be against us?” With the Trinity’s prompting and our willing obedience during this Lent, we can come closer to salvation. The group meets on Sundays after the 9:30am Mass. This is an important time for our children. We encourage all parents and guardians to see that their children attend all of the classes. Thank you to our generous teachers for their desire to share the Lord’s teachings with these, our children. Please pray for these children as they learn more about the Lord. Please note the following revised schedule of classes for the remainder of the school year: March 16, 23. Classes on March 23rd will begin at 10:45am, instead of 11:00. There will be an End-of-the-Year celebration immediately following class on that day, ending at approximately 12:30pm. All students are encouraged to attend! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Come join our youth ministry! It’s a chance to meet new people and have a good time, while growing in your relationship with God.
